Happy Victoria Day Weekend

This is the first long weekend of the summer season. The beach is only 15 minutes from here and we have a steady stream of cottagers on Friday evening and Saturday morning driving through town. Our little town seems to be the hub for canoers and kayakers. At one point there were three companies offering to let you canoe or kayak down the river.
The Mennonites have started their farmer's market again. They bring their wares and set up behind the arena. We see them parking their horses on the street behind our house.
I chose this picture today because the few lily of the valley that I have just bloomed. I picked the little stems and brought them in the house. They are sitting on the table beside the loveseat. They are so fragrant and the sweet smell meets my nose every so often and triggers memories of my childhood.
Our weather all week was wonderful and we got a lot of garden work accomplished. Today it rained first thing in the morning. I am sure the cottagers are not very happy. There is a wonderful breeze coming in the windows now. The grass is green and the leaves are covering the lawn making it our oasis. To all of you, have a good weekend.

Hoping that Warm Weather Returns

I had to share this beautiful ballerina in pink with you this morning. As I have said I love pink.Thank you Karen at the "Graphics Fairy". I am planning a pink tea party for my girlfriends. I think I will use this picture somewhere that day. She is too pretty to keep all to myself.
We have had extremely wet weather the last couple of weeks. It rained so hard the other day that my fish pond is completely full of water again. I am going to have to start over. There was so much rain that there was a puddle extending beyond the edge of the pond into the yard. It took a day for the water to seep into the ground. The birds were having such fun in the puddles. Everything is lush and green; all of the plants are happy including the weeds.
My lilacs are in bloom. I think that I should be able to cut some today and bring them into the house. My favourite flowers are, lilacs, lily-of-the-valley, peonies and roses. My peonies are coming up as well. I had a few lily-of-the-valley but I do not see them growing this year. I guess I will have to get more. They seem to be partial to the acid soil around the pine trees.
We have grey skies at the moment but they are calling for sun tomorrow. I know one thing we have had enough rain for a while. The river and the creeks are overflowing. Enjoy your weekend.

Happy Mother's Day

I wish everyone a very Happy Mother's Day. The weather man is calling for sunshine for tomorrow and I am keeping my fingers crossed. This year is flying by. It is cold here today. It is only 6 degrees celcius. I had little crowned sparrows visiting me in the yard yesterday. Their song is almost as sweet as the song sparrows'.
The pond is on hold until the weather clears as is the rest of the gardening. Our yard is very green with all of the rain that we have received. Smokey the little stray cat from our neighbourhood is still coming to the door. He comes every morning. He is there when I open the curtains in the morning waiting for food.
Chubby likes to make a lot of noise when breakfast is being served. Sometimes the three of them get so impatient when it is mealtime that they all hop on the counter to eat out of the bowls before I am finished. I think if there is such a thing as re-incarnation I would like to come back as a pampered cat. Spring cleaning awaits.

Rain Showers

I have not written in a while. We have been having a lot of rain lately. We have had two thunder storms. It has been so dry that when the farmers work in their fields all you can see is a cloud of dust. They have been complaining across the whole country. Things should be much better now. The rain has undone some of my work in the fish pond. The water was all gone and I just had to remove the remaining sand. I will have backtrack a little. The last couple of days have been sunny but not very warm.
I saw white crowned sparrows in the yard today. They almost sound as sweet as the song sparrows. When you see them hopping around on the ground the little white stripes stand out and you have to take a second look. The starling's eggs have hatched. I cannot see them from the ground but there sure is a lot of noise up in that tree.
Rudy continues to come outside with me. He loves to climb the rocks around the fish pond. I wonder what he will think when I fill it with water and put some fish in there. Rudy is very smart, when it is cold he is not interested in going outside. His favourite spot is on the love seat next to me.
I managed to make it to the lake for a walk. The beach looks relatively clean this spring. Along the way I saw a painted turtle swimming close to the shore. When he saw me he took off as fast as his little legs would carry him. On my way back I passed him again; he was out a ways with his head above the water like a little para scope.
Some forget-me-nots popped up around the pond in the last week. I didn't even know they were there. They must have needed the rain too. I am anxious to get back out in the yard. In the meantime I have a lot of spring cleaning to keep me busy.
